The NGO Education Code has implemented the ‘Understand My Silence’ project. The project has been implemented in the Municipality of Kamenica, with The Regional Programme on Local Democracy in the Western Balkans (ReLOaD) is financed by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). in partnership with the Municipality of Kamenica!
This project aims to increase the capacity, to support and promote the needs of people with disabilities, respectively the Deaf Community in the Municipality of Kamenica.
With the project “Understand My Silence” we aimed to build bridges of communication between parents and their children, siblings and friends through the teaching of sign language. The project has been implemented through two-stage training – the first part of the training and the second part of the training – the writing and reading.
As soon we understand the silence and needs of this community and take concrete action, we as a society will be able to interact with them and make it easier for them to access in whatever they need. In solidarity with this community, the Mayor of Kamenica Qëndron Kastrati has given unreserved support to the project and the community through the Language of Signs to be part of this project.
In order to raise awareness of society and support the demands of young people with disabilities, to promote the needs and requirements of people with disabilities with target – deaf people Education Code with the project “Understand my silence” with activists and volunteers of The Education Code Organization engaged in the project “Understand My Silence” in the field have identified and evidenced the deaf people in the entire Municipality of Kamenica with a focus on its rural areas. After the completion of the identification, the Education Code has organized the training of sign language and the Albanian language in order to improve the inter-family and social communication.
Participants in the training were deaf people, Albanians and Serbs, along with family members.
In this way parents have gained knowledge of sign language and have improved communication with their children and now better understand the specific needs and requirements of children. Over 30 parents (Serbs and Albanians) have attended the training.
Training lasted for two weeks where parents achieved good communication skills with their children. The beginning and conclusion of the trainings was done by the Executive director of Education Code, Mimoza K.Stanovci. The training was conducted by the sign language expert Përparim Pimi Haziri, Havushe Jashari Islami, Interpretation of sign language as well as organization was done by members and volunteers of the Education Code Organization.
Education Code through this project has achieved extraordinary results in improving communication between parents and their deaf children that directly affects the improvement of life, facilitating the requirements and needs of these families and inter-family and inter-ethnic communication.
